Stephen Thompson has said that he does not believe it is “smart” to fight Bruno Silva after Pereira missed weight for their UFC 291 bout.
Pereira weighed in at 188.5 pounds, 4.5 pounds over the welterweight limit. As a result, the fight was changed to a catchweight bout at 190 pounds.
Thompson, who weighed in at 179 pounds, said that he was “disappointed” that Pereira missed weight. He also said that he does not believe that it is safe to fight someone who is carrying that much extra weight.
“I don’t think it’s smart to fight someone who’s 4.5 pounds overweight,” Thompson said. “That’s a lot of weight to carry around. I don’t think it’s safe for either one of us.”
Thompson said that he is still willing to fight Pereira, but he wants to make sure that the fight is safe. He said that he would like to see Pereira rehydrate and weigh in again before the fight.
“I’m willing to fight him, but I want to make sure that it’s safe,” Thompson said. “I want to see him rehydrate and weigh in again before the fight.”
The UFC has not yet announced whether or not Pereira will be allowed to rehydrate and weigh in again. If he is not, the fight will be canceled.
The fight between Thompson and Pereira is scheduled to be the co-main event of UFC 291. The main event will feature a middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Jared Cannonier.
The event will take place on July 29, 2023, at the Perth Arena in Perth, Australia.
