The UEFA Champions League is set to kick off today with a lineup of exciting matches taking place across Europe. One particularly anticipated clash is between former Italian champions AC Milan and English newcomers Newcastle United.

In this showdown, Serie A side AC Milan will face off against Premier League club Newcastle United. It’s a historic moment for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who expressed his pride in leading the Magpies into their first Champions League game, pitting them against the formidable AC Milan at the San Siro Stadium.

Newcastle is making a remarkable return to top-tier European football competitions after a hiatus of two decades. Manager Eddie Howe is embracing the challenge, saying, “This is a game of football, and I believe that’s how we should approach it. Yes, it’s a special game, and we need to be at our best.”

For Howe, who spent most of his career as a player and manager at Bournemouth, this is his debut in the Champions League, even as a spectator. He has never attended a Champions League game before and is now making his first appearance at the home of seven-time European champions AC Milan.

“I’ve always been too busy working to take one in,” Howe admitted. “But it’s something I’ve often thought about. Yes, it will be a very proud moment for me. I think it will be a very proud moment for everyone connected with Newcastle to be back in the Champions League after such a long absence.”

Newcastle faces an AC Milan side that recently suffered a 5-1 defeat to Inter Milan in their local derby. The match will also see Magpies midfielder Sandro Tonali facing his former club, having left for Newcastle in a £53 million summer transfer.

“It will be the most thrilling feeling to step out into the packed stadium again,” said the Italian international. “They allowed me to live my dream here at AC Milan, but now I return as an opponent. I will have a lot of emotions. Everything happened so quickly with the transfer, I was overwhelmed at first, but I have encountered a wonderful team, wonderful staff, and I’m playing for people who love football. The people of Newcastle will support anyone.”

Newcastle’s last appearance in the Champions League dates back to March 2003 when they suffered a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Barcelona.

In addition to the AC Milan vs. Newcastle match, several other exciting fixtures are set to take place today, including Feyenoord vs. Celtic, Manchester City vs. Red Star Belgrade, Young Boys vs. RB Leipzig, Lazio vs. Atletico Madrid, Barcelona vs. Royal Antwerp, PSG vs. Borussia Dortmund, and Shakhtar Donetsk vs. FC Porto. Football fans can expect a thrilling start to the Champions League season.
