Miami, FL – Lionel Messi scored a last-minute winner in his debut for Inter Miami on Friday, giving the team a 1-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.
The 35-year-old Argentine star came on as a substitute in the 66th minute and scored the winning goal in the 90th minute. It was Messi’s first goal for Inter Miami since he signed with the team in June.
The victory was a major boost for Inter Miami, which is currently in last place in the MLS Eastern Conference. The team has struggled to score goals this season, but Messi’s arrival is expected to change that.
“It was a great feeling to score my first goal for Inter Miami,” Messi said after the game. “I’m still getting used to the team and the league, but I’m happy with my performance and I’m looking forward to helping the team win more games.”
Inter Miami’s next game is on Saturday against the New York Red Bulls. The game will be played at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
