Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has disclosed that she and her husband, Will Smith, have been leading “completely separate lives” since 2016. In an upcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith revealed that they had not previously made their separation public because they were still figuring out how to be in partnership while living separately.

The couple, who married in 1997, have not legally divorced. Their marriage has faced scrutiny during their time apart. In 2020, singer August Alsina revealed his romantic involvement with Pinkett Smith, which she confirmed during an episode of her show “Red Table Talk.” She described it as an “entanglement” and mentioned that they were going through a challenging period.

The couple’s marriage also faced public attention during the 2022 Oscars when Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock on stage after a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss due to alopecia.

In her interview with People magazine, Jada Pinkett Smith explained that she initially thought the Oscars slap was a comedic skit between the two men and realized it was real when Will started to walk back to his seat. She asked her husband if he was okay as soon as they were alone.

She described the fracture in her marriage as a result of “a lot of things” and that they were both “exhausted with trying” by 2016. Pinkett Smith had made a promise to herself that there would never be a reason for them to divorce, and she has been unable to break that promise.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s forthcoming memoir, “Worthy,” is set to provide more insights into her marriage, career, and early life. The book is scheduled for release on October 17, 2023.
